Among the largest and most celebrated of these depictions is the enormous painting by Sir Edward John Poynter in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney of c.1890, 'The Queen of Sheba's Visit to King Solomon' for which many drawings survive, many in the collection of the British Museum. However her figure appealed to a wealth of artists, writers, composers and designers who from the late Middle Ages onwards have depicted her in many artworks. Although the kingdom of Saba is a historical entity, there is no evidence to support a female ruler of any kind in this land, and there are no surviving inscriptions etc. The Bible (Book of Kings) and Quran relate how she set off to visit King Solomon (q.v., reigned mid 10thC BC) in Jerusalem to test his wisdom with 'hard questions'. Terrific writing, including great cameos of English boyhood-girlhood wonderfully acted by a stellar cast brilliant slice-of-history realism and a leading lady who is remarkably reminiscent of the late great Ingrid Bergman.identical smile and eyes, and that same voice! TQOSP kept me musing and reflecting for some hours after. There was enough darkness and complexity throughout that a viewer knew some surreal touches would endure. Billed as a comedy-drama, the funny bits were often subtle, sometimes laugh-out-loud, usually juxtaposed skilfully against parallel action.

Fortunately we got outdoors enough to let the sunlight in. Apart from the almost-too-real gloominess of mid-century interiors I loved this movie. I was quickly alerted at the start with the vertigo-inducing camera pans, setting the cross-nation premise. 2 Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravanwith camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stonesshe came to Solomon and talked with him. (There was a 'foreign' stranger in that movie also!) It didn't. 10 When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.

With some hesitation ('Please, not another Brit time-warp experience!') and having recently attended Ladies in Lavendar, with its near-similar historical time-frame, related West-country locale and understated realism of rural mid-20C buttoned-up Britishness - this film could have flopped for this movie buff.
